KINGSPORT — Sarah M. "Nanny" Smith, 64, of Kingsport, received her wings on Sunday (June 28, 2009) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Sarah was born in Batesville, Miss., to the late Olan T. and Sarah Austin Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Juanita Smith; son, Chester Smith, Jr.; grandson, Jamal F. Price; her parents, Olan T. and Sarah Austin Carpenter; one sister and eight brothers.
Sarah leaves to celebrate her abundant life her daughters, Chesteen Carnette and husband, Anthony, Glenda Smith and Karen Williams and husband, Gordon/daughter/granddaughter, Tawana Medina and husband, Javier, all of Kingsport; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Eula V. Harris; brothers, William Carpenter, Clifton Carpenter, James Carpenter and Larry Carpenter; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Sherry Ketron.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Great Commission Church, 1249 Chestnut St., Kingsport. Friends may also call anytime at the home of Karen and Gordon Williams.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the church with Pastor Matthew Thomas officiating.
Burial will follow in Liberty Hill Cemetery in Mount Carmel. Pallbearers will be Thomas Anderson, Gerald Smith, Marcus Rogers, Anthony Rogers, Fred Stallings, Sedrick Smith, family and friends.
