Gayle P. Turner

 
 
Gayle Patricia Turner was born July 2, 1948 to Eldridge N. Turner and Lucille H. Turner from Gate City, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents Eldridge N. Turner and Lucille H. Turner and grandparents, Oscar and Zonia Henson of Burnsville, North Carolina and Andy Turner from Gate City, Virginia.



Gayle attended Douglass High School in Kingsport, and graduated from Gate City High School in Gate City, Virginia. She went on to study at Morristown Community College and graduated from Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee with a degree in Special Education. Gayle received her Masters Degree from Virginia State University. Gayle was a long time teacher in the Richmond Public School System, retiring after 30 years.

Gayle was very active in her home church - Hale’s Chapel United Methodist in Gate City, Virginia. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, she moved her church home to Asbury Church Hill United Methodist Church, joining Asbury in 1978. She was very active in the District United Methodist Church and served as Administrative council secretary and faithfully participated on numerous mission trips with District UMW. She became a senior choir member, trustee member, and secretary for Asbury United Methodist Women. She served as Communications Coordinator for "The Word Newsletter" from 2007 - 2015. Gaye was also involved with the Maymont Civic Association and the Maymont Flower Club.

Gayle loved to travel and never missed an opportunity to see the world. She and her cousin, Judy Gray Johnson, became "traveling buddies". Together they travelled to Canada, California, North and South Carolina, Florida, and New Mexico, and various parts of Virginia by car, stopping at various points in between. The next trip was to be by train to explore the Western part of the United States. This never occurred before she became ill.

Although Gayle came from a very small family (only child), she considered the members of the church and various civic organizations her family. She loved every one of them and made her presence felt in all of the outreach activities.

Gayle is survived by two special friends and care givers: Jacqueline Lawrence and Linda Porter from Richmond, Va.; an Aunt, Mrs. Marie Young of Burnsville, North Carolina; an Uncle Jake Henson of Burnsville, North Carolina; cousins Hoyate Turner Jr. of Memphis, TN.; Dr. Rosemary Gray of Cypress, TX, Judy Gray Johnson of Valencia, CA.; Joyce Tarter and Linda McKinney of Kingsport, TN.; Special cousins Jeanette Henson from Asheville, N.C. and Sheila Bonnila Barder from Gallop, New Mexico. Gayle will be sorely missed from her many cousins and many dear friends from her garden club, Asbury - Church Hill United Methodist Church and Hale’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m - 12:00 noon, Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home, Gate City VA. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon, in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Steve Templeton and Rev. Rochelle Maxwell officiating. Members of Hales Chapel Church Choir will provide the music; Greg and Becky White will participate.

Burial will follow the service at East Tennessee Cemetery, Kingsport, TN. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Larry Allen Turner

  KINGSPORT - Larry Allen Turner, 64 of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 23, 2016 with his loving wife, Beverly Ann by his side following a brief illness.

Larry was born in Cherokee County, SC but resided most of his life in Kingsport. He was Army Veteran serving two tours in Vietnam. Larry was employed by Willamette Paper Company for over 15 years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching college football and working around the house. Larry took tremendous pride and care in his vehicle, always keeping them spotless.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Napolean Thompson and one brother.

Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Beverly Ann Turner; daughter, Jessica Swearingen; son, Jason Swain; mother, Bernice West; sister, Anna Ray Houston; best friend and brother-in-law, Albert Arnold and wife Mae; three other brothers-in-law, Ricky Arnold, Roger Hammonds and Tony Hammond and wife Charity; sister-in-law, Lise Wolfe and husband Kenny; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.

A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Greg DePriest officiating.

A graveside service, with military honors, will be held Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:45 pm.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Color Guard, P.O. Box 66, Kingsport, TN 37662.

Funeral services for Sadie Davenport will be held at 1:00pm Monday January 25, 2016 at the Mt. Olive Church, 810 Montgomery St., in Johnson City, TN.

The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00pm prior to the services at the church.

Burial will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens in Johnson City, TN.

Richard A. Holloway

Richard A. Holloway, 63 of Johnson City, TN passed away peacefully at his home on January 16, 2016. His devoted wife and daughter were by his side.
Richard served two years in the United States Airforce and left with honorable recognition. He also attended technical college for drafting. He recently retired from the VA after being employed there for more than 30 years.

He is preceded in death by his father, LeRoy Holloway as well as other family members.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing his mother, Loretha Holloway; his devoted wife of 36 years, Gloria Holloway and daughters: Indya Holloway and Barbara Sutton (Charles), both of Johnson City; two sisters, Anita Covington and Connie Hardge; one brother, LeRoy Holloway; two grandsons, Charles Sutton III and Justice Sutton; and one Aunt, Carolyn Wilson (Mickey).

The family of Richard Holloway would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support of the family during this difficult time.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm Friday January 22, 2016 at Grace Temple Church in Johnson City, TN. The family will receive friends prior to the services from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at the Church.

Harry L. Blackman

WEBER CITY, VA - Mr. Harry L. Blackman, 51, 1000 U.S. Highway, Weber City, Va,, departed this life on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.


Mr. Blackman is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ms. Annette Blackman, brothers,  Mr. William (Laura Carey) Blackman, and Mr. Eugene (Evette) Blackman, sisters, Ms. Lillian Blackman, and Ms. Nellie Blackman, and 18 nieces and nephews,

John Harrison Manuel, Sr.


GREENEVILLE — Sunrise December 20, 1921. Sunset December 28, 2015.


Mr. John Harrison Manuel, Sr., was born December 20, 1921, in Greeneville, TN.



He was the son of the late John Franklin Manuel and Anna Snapp Manuel both of Greeneville, TN.


Mr. Manuel served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. He received an Honorable Discharge from the service on November 3, 1946.


Upon returning from the service he married Ms. Mollie Jane Goines of Limestone, TN, on May 10, 1947. He worked for a short time at the Veterans Administration in Johnson City, TN., he later moved back to Greeneville and began working at Meco Industries where he later retired.


Mr. Manuel was a Member of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, TN, for many years. He serviced as an Elder and a Sunday school teacher for many years. Mr. Manuel serviced his church faithfully as long as his health permitted. He loved working in his garden, and working with his wife in her flower garden.


Mr. Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, and seven sisters, Annie Lee Manuel, Emily Manuel, Lillie Mae Manuel, Nolia B. Price, Frances Louise Manuel, Sylvia Rogers, and Cardelia Brown; three brothers, Herbert Manuel, Frank Manuel, and Jessie V. Manuel.


Mr. Manuel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie Manuel; four children, John H. Manuel, Jr. (Morena) of California, Jerome G. Manuel (Phyllis), and Calvin P. Manuel, both of Johnson City; a daughter, Cassandra D. Manuel of Greeneville, TN; one brother, Mr. Walter Arvin Manuel of Greeneville, TN; six grandchildren, Wendy and Kimberly Manuel of California, Darrell Manuel of Johnson City, TN, Yentyl Manuel of Georgia, Isaith Madison of Bristol, TN, and Tina Shell of Johnson City, TN; two step grandchildren, Marcus Prather, and Felicia Perking of Johnson City, TN; five great grandchildren, Nicholas Manuel and Anthony Manuel of Georgia, and Ania Shell of Johnson City, TN. He was also surrounded in love by his nieces, nephews, and many friends whom he considered and extension of his family.


Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday January 4, 2016, at the Birchette Mortuary Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the services. Burial will follow at the VA National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN.

Jerry William McConnell


Jerry William McConnell age 65, Johnson City TN., went home to be with the lord on December 28, 2015.



He was the son of the late James and Carolyn McConnell, Grandson of the late Alvir and Hattie McConnell, and Virgil and Nina Perkins. He attended Douglas Elementary, Langston High School and Graduated from Science Hill High School and developed life long friendships there with Fred “Buddy” Scott, Mike Bristol, and Sonny Widner. He graduated from ETSU with a degree in Liberal Studies.

He had a close relationship with God, loved reading his Bible and attending Friendship Baptist Church. He was employed at Nuclear Fuel Services for many years and worked at the VA Mountain Home until 2011 when he retired due to illness.
He was a Vietnam veteran receiving the Bronze star and Medal of Valor.
Left to mourn his loss is his only child Marque McConnell Diamondcrest(Rachel), 8 Grandchildren, Carolyn, Jamese, Marquena, Marque Jr., Caris, James, Britton, and Braislinn, all of Johnson City. He also leaves behind an Uncle Terry Perkins(Noelle), of Covington GA. Cousins David Johnson, of Knoxville, TN., Rose Tate and Jane Brown both of California, and a host of cousins in several areas.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors a MSHA in the ICU and 5500. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Good Samaritan Ministries.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday January 9, 2016 at the Birchette Mortuary Chapel. Dr. C.H.Charlton presiding.

Carolyn Collins Harrison

Carolyn Collins Harrison age 61 of Morristown went to be with the Lord Thursday (12/31/15) at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was a loving and caring mother and friend to many and loved by all whose lives she touched.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Katherine Dennis, grandmother, Ada Collins, and grandfather, Robert Collins.

She is survived by fiancé, Bill Armstrong, of Morristown, 3 children, Christopher A. Collins (Rachael) of Morristown, Linda Collins of Balch Springs, TX, and Shawn Harrison of Morristown, 4 grandchildren, Abreeanna Hood, Madison Thomas, Gabriella Madison, and Mackenzie Collins, 3 great grandchildren, Kaiden Hope Terry, Emerie Faith Terry and Adriel Ezra Howell, aunt, Dorothy Collins Rucker (Curtis) of Morristown, 2 sisters, Nettie Marie Williams (Henry), and Barbara Ann Collins, 4 brothers, Howard Thomas Collins (Kathy), Charles Edward Collins, Roy Collins (Denise), and James "Michael" Franklin Rogers (Ida), several nieces and nephews including, Howard "Boo" Thomas Collins, Jr., Teresa Ann Lopez and Ebony Angel Goode in which she cared for as her own children.
