Gayle P. Turner

Gayle Patricia Turner was born July 2, 1948 to Eldridge N. Turner and Lucille H. Turner from Gate City, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents Eldridge N. Turner and Lucille H. Turner and grandparents, Oscar and Zonia Henson of Burnsville, North Carolina and Andy Turner from Gate City, Virginia.

Gayle attended Douglass High School in Kingsport, and graduated from Gate City High School in Gate City, Virginia. She went on to study at Morristown Community College and graduated from Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee with a degree in Special Education. Gayle received her Masters Degree from Virginia State University. Gayle was a long time teacher in the Richmond Public School System, retiring after 30 years.

Gayle was very active in her home church - Hale’s Chapel United Methodist in Gate City, Virginia. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, she moved her church home to Asbury Church Hill United Methodist Church, joining Asbury in 1978. She was very active in the District United Methodist Church and served as Administrative council secretary and faithfully participated on numerous mission trips with District UMW. She became a senior choir member, trustee member, and secretary for Asbury United Methodist Women. She served as Communications Coordinator for "The Word Newsletter" from 2007 - 2015. Gaye was also involved with the Maymont Civic Association and the Maymont Flower Club.

Gayle loved to travel and never missed an opportunity to see the world. She and her cousin, Judy Gray Johnson, became "traveling buddies". Together they travelled to Canada, California, North and South Carolina, Florida, and New Mexico, and various parts of Virginia by car, stopping at various points in between. The next trip was to be by train to explore the Western part of the United States. This never occurred before she became ill.

Although Gayle came from a very small family (only child), she considered the members of the church and various civic organizations her family. She loved every one of them and made her presence felt in all of the outreach activities.

Gayle is survived by two special friends and care givers: Jacqueline Lawrence and Linda Porter from Richmond, Va.; an Aunt, Mrs. Marie Young of Burnsville, North Carolina; an Uncle Jake Henson of Burnsville, North Carolina; cousins Hoyate Turner Jr. of Memphis, TN.; Dr. Rosemary Gray of Cypress, TX, Judy Gray Johnson of Valencia, CA.; Joyce Tarter and Linda McKinney of Kingsport, TN.; Special cousins Jeanette Henson from Asheville, N.C. and Sheila Bonnila Barder from Gallop, New Mexico. Gayle will be sorely missed from her many cousins and many dear friends from her garden club, Asbury - Church Hill United Methodist Church and Hale’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m - 12:00 noon, Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home, Gate City VA.
