The funeral service for Mrs. Cora “Kandy” L. Harold, 67, who entered into eternal rest at her home on Sunday (Aug. 4, 2013), will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. from the Central Baptist Church with Pastor Ricardo Dorcean officiating.

Mrs. Rebecca Moore Hale

“I fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” -Timothy 4:7

KINGSPORT —Mrs. Rebecca Moore Hale, 88, of 4017 Black Oak Drive, Kingsport, answered the call of Jesus at home on Saturday, (Aug. 3, 2013) after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Hale was born on June 2, 1925 in Osaka, Va. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Osaka High School. On May 13, 1946 she and Robert E. Hale, Sr. were united in marriage. In 1952, her family moved to Kingsport. She was active in her church where she loved singing in the choir; active in the community where she was a member of the Eastern Stars, an Esquirette, a hospital volunteer, and a community mother. She loved cooking, floral arranging, and raising her six children, foster children, and later adopting two of her great-grandchildren. She truly enjoyed her lunch dates with “The Ladies.”
Preceded in death were her loving mother, Mrs. Anna Robbins; her sister, Mrs. Mattie Carnes; a great-grandchild, Christopher Hale; and her special niece, Mrs. Mary Jane Carnes.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Robert E. Hale Sr. of the home; her sons, Freddie L. Hale and wife Mrs. Carolyn Dulaney Hale of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert E. Hale Jr. and wife Mrs. Brenda Simpson Hale of Atlanta, Ga., Carl E. Hale and wife Mrs. Chynet Bond Hale of Kingsport, William E. Hale (Tarik Hassan) of Kingsport; her daughters, Mrs. Dolores A. Hale Singleton of Brownsville, Tenn., and Mrs. Linda L. Hale Wade and husband Rev. Donny D. Wade of Kingsport; 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Lomax of Big Stone Gap, Va., several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to especially thank her caregiver whom we’ve adopted to the family, Mrs. Allison Caswell and husband Jimmy. We would also like to thank Dr. Andy Delwadia, the Holston Valley -5th Floor Doctors and Nurses, and Wellmont Hospice for their care, love and support.

Friends may call on the family at the home, 4017 Black Oak Drive, Kingsport. The family will receive friends from 11 am to noon at Central Baptist Church, 301 Carver Street, Kingsport until the time of service.

Services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the church with the Rev. Vincent Dial, Rev. Ricardo Dorcean, and Rev. Donny Wade officiating.

The Interment will follow at the VA National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.

Evelyn Bernice Simpson

    KINGSPORT — Mrs. Evelyn Bernice Simpson, 82, of 850 Dale St. Kingsport, entered into eternal rest with her heavenly King on Monday, (July 29, 2013), at Indian Path Medical Center at 9:30 p.m.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and friend. She was a faithful member of Grace Temple Church Eternal Life Center, in Johnson City, Tenn., where she served on many boards and committees. She loved the Lord and has always taught her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews about Him.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Goldman W. Batman and Mrs. Lula A Batman; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Brabson, Mrs. Iva Jean Goins, and Ms. Lena Batman; one brother, Mr. Carl Batman; one son Mr. Michael Simpson; and one great- grandson, baby Rylan Whelchel.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 61 years, Mr. Brown Simpson, Jr.; one daughter,
Mrs. Carolyn Whelchel; one sister, Mrs. Willie Mae Deadrick; three grandchildren, Ms. Tiffany Tarter, Mr. Brian Whelchel, and Ms. Camina Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Ms. Hayden Thompson, Mr. Payton Thompson, Mr. Callon France, Braxton Whelchel, Tre Whelchel, Micah Sutherland, and Baby Aiden Brooks; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Bernice Simpson will be conducted from Bethel AME Zion Church on Aug. 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Elder Charles Hawkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of service.

Interment will follow at East Lawn Cemetery.

KINGSPORT — Mr. James Calvin Skaggs, 58, departed this life on Wednesday, (July 17, 2013), at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Mr. Skaggs was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Central Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be conducted from the VA National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. on Friday at 1 p.m.

Hugh Hodges

KINGSPORT — Hugh Hodges, 85, 1036 Lake Street, Kingsport, departed this life at 6:18 a.m. Sunday (July 14, 2013) at Wexford House after a brief illness.

Mr. Hodges was a native of Newberry, S.C. He moved to Kingsport at an early age. He was employed at Tennessee Eastman Co., retiring in 1987 after 36 years of service.

Mr. Hodges was a member of Central Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Mrs. Vina Hodges; wife, Mrs. Frances Hodges; four sisters; and five brothers.

Surviving are a son, William Lewis (Sylvia) Bond, Gardenia Calif.; grandson Todd Bond, Atlanta, Ga; granddaughter, Mrs. Veronica (Derrell) Bradley, Long Beach, Calif.; great-granddaughter, Ms. Avynn Bradley, Long Beach; great-grandson, Evan Bradley; nephew/caregiver, Willie (Jeannie) Hodges; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Anthony Wayne Wood

KINGSPORT — Anthony Wayne Wood departed this life on July 5, 2013. He was 53 years old.



Anthony worked at Big Lots for the last few years and was friendly to many who passed through. He was a person who enjoyed talking to people about “any and everything.” When his nieces were little they called him “Uncle or Uncum” and that nickname has continued through the years with family members.

He leaves behind his sister Mrs. Jackie Ross (Rollen); one nephew, Jonathan Ross; two nieces, Mrs. Lynette Reese (James) and Ms. Renee Daniels; a special Aunt Mrs. Mary Carpenter; and many special cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews and many friends.

We’ll miss you Anthony! Rest in Peace!

    JOHNSON CITY — Justin Tyler Machen departed this life of Friday (June 28, 2013) after a brief illness. Justin was born in Kingsport, Tenn. on July 10, 1993.

   Justin was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Cecelia Henderson. 

 

   Surviving family includes his parents, Jerry Jr., and Karen Machen; brothers, Jasen and Dustin; grandparents, James Henderson, Alfreeda 

Machen, Jerry Sr., and Linda Machen; and a host of uncles aunts, cousins, and friends.

   The family will receive friends at the Birchette Mortuary Chapel on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.; a memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
