Jessie (Phillips) Taylor

KINGSPORT — Mrs. Jessie (Phillips) Taylor, 60, 1072 Robertson St., Apt. #181, fell into everlasting sleep in the arms of God on Thursday morning (Feb. 5, 2009) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.


Mrs. Taylor was born in Batesville, Miss. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Cashley and Odessie Phillips. Mrs. Taylor moved to Church Hill in the spring of 1967 and soon started working to build a life for herself. She moved to Kingsport and worked several jobs.
She met and married her late husband, Mr. Terry Taylor of Elizabethton, and they raised five children together.
Left to mourn her passing are four daughters, Rhonda Williams (Carl Hale) and Sharlita Terray Taylor, of Kingsport, Keyotia Rochelle Taylor of Nashville and Keyonia Lachelle Taylor of Memphis; one son, Tyrone (Joni) Phillips of Kingsport. Also mourning her death is her four sisters, Lenora (J.W.) Smith Memphis, Ollivet (S.V.) Cox Courtland, Miss., Annie (John) Ewing Johnson City and Lucille Williams Kingsport; five brothers, Odie and Amos Phillips of Kingsport, Cashley Jr. and Lonnie Phillips of Omaha, Neb. and Namon Phillips of Pendelton, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who all loved her dearly, and we will miss her beyond what words can describe.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon till time of services Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Maple Street, Kingsport and anytime at Mrs. Taylor’s residence.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the church.
Interment will be held at Washington County Memorial Garden, Johnson City.

Nelson Foster

KINGSPORT — Nelson Foster, 84, of Kingsport, and went home to be with God on Monday (Jan. 19, 2009) at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.


He was born March 30, 1924 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., spent his youth in Nashville, and came to Kingsport in 1941 where he spent most of his life. After retiring from TVA as a truck driver, Nelson worked for Creech Radiator Service for several years. He was also a bus driver and body shop repairman.
Nelson was a member of Central Baptist Church and a member of Universal Masonic Lodge # 239 for twenty-five years.
His wife, Georgia Edna Foster, preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his lost, his son, Nelson Keith Foster of Kingsport;
granddaughters, Nicole, Keita, and Myee McKinney (her children, Keence and Dravin); other great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Leftridge of Chicago, Ill. and Dorothy Jones of Nashville; six nieces and eight nephews; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Daniels officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Cemetery.

Celebration of life services for Mrs. Billie S. Rutledge, 76, of Kingsport,
who left cradled in the arms of Jesus on Sunday (Jan. 18, 2009), will be conducted from the St. Mark United Methodist Church, 929 Maple Street, today at 7 p.m. with Pastor Doug Tweed officiating.

Jessye Lee Welsh

KINGSPORT — Jessye Lee Welsh, 93, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Jan. 5, 2009) at her home.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church. She loved volunteering her time helping others.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Maggie Campbell Watterson; her husband, Elroy Welsh in 1995.
She is survived by her son, Walter Wagstaff of Kingsport; her granddaughter, Jacqueline M. Copridge of Wichita , Kansas.; great-grandson, Ashton Copridge of Wichita, Kansas.; brother, Richard Watterson and wife, Barbara of Johnson City; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church in Kingsport. Funeral services will follow with Elder Charles Hawkins officiating.
Entombment services will be held following the funeral service at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Sonya Yvette Senior Delaney

JOHNSON CITY — It is with great sadness that we announce the homegoing of our precious Sonya Yvette Senior Delaney after a brief illness Tuesday morning from Johnson City Memorial Hospital.
Sonya graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in 1989 and attended North East State, employed at AT&T and Ekoquest.


She leaves behind her husband Arron; son, Jairus; daughter, Arianna; and a host of friends, relatives and loved ones who will greatly miss her. Sonya was an angel who touched number of lives.
Charles and Nancy, 153 Bluebell Drive, would like to thank everyone for the great outpouring of love and prayers during this difficult time, also we would like to thank her best friend Shelly for being there for her.

Marshall Allen Long

Marshall Allen Long, 63, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2008 at his residence with family by his side.

He was born April 20, 1945 in Church Hill (New Canton).


He lived in Gate City, VA for the past 36 years. A member of Hale's Chapel United Methodist Church and Choir and also a member of the New Beginnings Quartet. He worked for many years with Greyhound Bus Lines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Blanche and Eldridge Lyons; sister, Cecile Leeper and a nephew, James Leeper, Jr.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Sarah (Susie) Long, of the home; six daughters, Pamela Mack, Gate City, VA, Shaunda Mack (Jessee), Kingsport, TN, Kedith Renay Anderson, Kingsport, TN, Carmen and husband, Brian Hurt, Gate City, VA, Yolanda Mack (Sanford), Kingsport, TN and Jonikki and husband, Ron Cope, Gate City, VA; one son, Rodney Mack (La Tonya), Kingsport, TN; thirteen grandchildren, Tylasha Mack, Terrence Mack, D'Andre Mack, Tihlee Anderson, Brandon Mack, LaKeisha Mack, Ava Hurt, Shaniquah Mack, Savana Green, Toni Cope, Jayce Green, Brianna Hodge and Zayne Reed; one great granddaughter, Adrianna Lane; one brother, James W. Henrietta Joyce Huff-Horton

Ms. Henrietta Joyce Huff-Horton of Kingsport went home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day. She was 57 years old.
She was born in Stonega Va., and was the seventh child of Evelyn I. Carter and Charles F. Huff.


She attended Church Hill High School in Church Hill and was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Evelyn Huff; two brothers, Sylvester and Jonathan D. Huff; and a sister Gracie D. Huff.
She leaves to celebrate her homegoing her son, Brian S. Huff; three daughters, Crystal Bogus-White (Robert) Kingsport, Jacquetta Steel, Cleveland Ohio, Cherish Bogus-Fisher, Kingsport; five sisters, Zeffree Price, Cincinnati, Ohio, Reba Austin (Henry), Winston-Salem, N.C., Virginia and Kitty Huff, Kingsport, Sharon White, Columbia S.C.; four brothers, Charles Huff, Orlando, Fla., Harold Huff (Felicia) Winston-Salem, N.C., Mark Huff (Shelia), Kingsport, Sylvester (Don) Huff, Cincinnati, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Kiowa, Sylvoski, Jasmine, Eve, Ursula, Lil Robie, Quindalyn, Jalin, Jared, Anthony, William; and one great-grandchild, JaNiah. Kenneth (Scat) Springs

Mr. Kenneth Springs (Scat) 68, born on February 8, 1940 and departed this life on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.


Mr. Springs was a retiree from Bristol Compressor in Bristol, VA and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was the lead singer for “The Scat Cats” band and a Veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Springs was preceded in death by his parents’ Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lester and Janie Springs, Davidson, NC; son, Curtis Springs; brother, Carl Springs; two sister, Loretta Davis and Betty Brown.

Robert Lee Smith

KINGSPORT — On Dec. 13, 2008, God’s angels came to take Robert Lee Smith home.
He was born to the late Hurd Smith and Alice Whiteside in Rogersville. Also preceding Robert was his wife, Ms. Hallie B. Smith.

He moved to Rochester, N.Y. for a short period of time and later moved to Rogersville.
Robert retired from Holston Defense Company, a divestiture of Eastman Kodak Company, after 25 years of service. Raised on the family’s farm lead to enjoyment of working in his vegetable garden, raising “hogs” (as he would say) working in his yard, and canning fruit and vegetables.
Robert was predeceased by one granddaughter, Hallene Blocker; five brothers, James E. Looney, Clifford E. Looney, Will Looney, Joe Looney and Kenneth Smith; one sister, Lucille Looney; two step-children, Virgil Livingston and Marva Mack.
He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish in loving memory an only child, Mrs. Laura Blocker (JC) of Rochester, N.Y.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Jean Allen (Joe) of Rochester; four grandchildren, Cathy Toney, Linda Gaddis (Willie), Robbie Blocker and Jason Blocker, all of Rochester, N.Y.; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Armstrong of Cleveland Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Bessie Looney (Will), Frankie Looney (Joe) and Frankie Smith (Ken); a very close and loving nephew, Mr. Thomas Looney; a special and dear friend, Mr. Clyde Harrison; and a host of other nieces, nephews, family members, step grandchildren and friends.

Kermit Boston

MR. KERMIT BOSTON IS THE HUSBAND OF FAYE RUFFIN OF RIVERVIEW-SOUTH CENTRAL KINGSPORT

Kermit H. Boston (1935-2008) Esteemed Figure in the Public Service Community Passes December 7, 2008-Lifelong executive, teacher, and sage to the public service community, Kermit H. Boston, passed away on November 23, 2008.


Boston was mourned by his friends and admirers at the many organizations he was committed to, including KQED Public Media, Grace Cathedral, Sigma Pi Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternities. Boston was a senior partner at BKB Associates, Inc., San Francisco, providing professional development in management leadership and diversity, employee relations, and other areas of corporate education.

From 1991-1999, Boston was Director of Corporate Education, Computer Curriculum Corporations/Simon and Schuster Technology Group, in Sunnyvale, CA. For more than 20 years, Boston held various top management positions with McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, where he became the first African-American Corporate Vice President and General Manager of two revenue divisions.

Boston began his career as a teacher before entering the world of publishing and media. Boston dedicated his life to service and that is reflected in the many organizations where he dedicated his time and support.

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Germantown, and became a member of their Trustee Board in 1964. He moved on from there to the Riverside Church of New York City, where he became the Chair of the Board of Deacons. When he came to San Francisco, he became a member of Grace Cathedral, where he was a Past Chair of their Board of Trustees and was named Trustee Emeritus.

He was past Chairman of the KQED Board of Directors, and served on the Boards of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the vice president of Lay Community of the Association of Public Televisions Stations, a founder and vice president of the Bay Area Community Development Corporation, the Bishop's representative and board member of the Episcopal Senior Communities, Incorporated.

He was a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a past president of the San Francisco Graduate Chapter. He was also a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity - the Boulé - and was immediate past sire archon of Beta Upsilon Boulé of S.F. and was elected Regional Sire Elect for the Pacific Region in October, 2007.

Boston's commitment to his community can also be seen by many member organizations and affiliations to whose existence he contributed: Chief Learning Officer for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity University, Past President, San Francisco Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Past President, Board of Managers, Buchanan Street YMCA-S.F.; Chairman Trustee Board of Grace Cathedral, S.F.; Chair of Elkus Ranch Board, UC Extension; Member, Board of Directors, Black Executives, Exchange Program of the National Urban League; Founding member and Vice President of the Bay Area Community Development Foundation; and a Founding member of The Western Addition Literary Reading & Discussion Group.

Boston's past member organizations and affiliations include: Member, Board of Directors, Literacy Volunteers of New York City and Member and Chairman of Board of Deacons, Riverside Church, New York. Boston earned his BS in Education from Cheyney University, Cheyney, PA and his MS in Administration from University of Pennsylvania. Among Boston's many awards are the James R. Ball Award from the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD); Outstanding Alumni of Cheyney University; Gamma Chi Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha, "Man of the Year."

Boston is survived by his wife, Barbra Ruffin-Boston; daughter, Kimberly Ketchum of Tucker, GA; grandson Markus Alixander; granddaughter, Alicia Marie; sister, Jane Jordan of Philadelphia, and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held in both San Francisco and Philadelphia.

The San Francisco Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, December 9 at Grace Cathedral, 1100 California Street. Acknowledgements from other organizations and Omega Services: Sigma Pi Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternities will begin at 1:30 pm, followed by a Memorial and Service of Thanksgiving, beginning at 3:00. Philadelphia services will be conducted on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Germantown, 41 W. Rittenhouse Street Philadelphia, PA 19144.

Thomas Edward Carpenter

KINGSPORT — Mr. Thomas Edward Carpenter, 47, 3520 Watterson St., Kingsport, entered eternal rest with our Lord on Nov. 20, 2008 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Chester, James, David, Arbury and Jimmy; one sister, Mrs. Mary Carpenter Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Chris Cassandra Singleton Carpenter;
children, Tyrone Horton, Thomas Terrell Carpenter, Antonia Phillips, Kenny McKinney, Nakita Singleton, Octavius Carpenter Logan, Malecka Carpenter, Shanequa Carpenter and Tara Carpenter; four grandchildren; mother, Mrs. Dorothy (Herman) Logan; four brothers, James Carpenter of Anchorage Alaska, Larry, Clifton and William Carpenter, all of Kingsport; three sisters, Ms. Julia Ann Lee (Douglass) Sarah Mae Smith and Eula Harris, all of Kingsport.

Ella Jo Bradley

ROGERSVILLE — Ella Jo Bradley, a distinguished artist, groundbreaking educator, and loving wife and mother passed away Tuesday (Nov. 18, 2008) at Johnson City Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

She is the daughter of the late Inez and John Leeper. A graduate of Rogersville’s Swift Memorial College and East Tennessee State University, Mrs. Bradley was a retired teacher with the Hawkins County School System following 37 years of service. She was a member of the Rogersville First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her loving husband, Andrew Thomas

Magnolia Williams

KINGSPORT — Magnolia Williams, 82, of Kingsport, died unexpectedly Saturday (Nov. 15, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Knoxville, Ms. Williams moved to Surgoinsville at an early age and later made her home in Kingsport. She was a member of Full Gospel Mission and after many years of service, retired from Tri-City Towel & Linen. Magnolia was a friend to m a n y.
She was preceded in death by three children, James and Michael Williams and Diane (Sissy) Hale.
Surviving are three children, Steven R. (Almita) Williams , Pasadena, Tex., Patricia Skaggs and Shelia Johnson, both of Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Valeria Williams, Kingsport; a sister, Dora Miller, Burlington, N.J.; a brother, William Neal, Burlington, N.J.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

KINGSPORT — Margaret Miller Anderson, 54, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday (Oct. 30, 2008) in Blountville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Willard and Ruth Miller; sisters, Cora Lee Roderick, Letha Miller, Linda Miller; two brothers, William H. Miller and Bobby M. Miller; grandparents, William and Nellie Rogers and Joe and Bessie Miller.

Betty Turner Wolfe

GATE CITY, Va. — Betty Turner Wolfe, 82, passed away Friday (Sept. 5, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born in Gate City on Sept. 28, 1925 and was the daughter of the late David Turner and Maggie Mays Turner.
She retired from Appalachian Power Company. Mrs. Wolfe was a member of the Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kay Ronald Wolfe; sons, Joe Kay Wolfe, Ronald Lee Wolfe, and Samuel Tomas Wolfe; great-grandchild, Kandance Wolfe .

Mrs. Gillenwater was born in Hancock County, Tenn., and made her home in Kingsport for the past 60 plus years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by her father, Mr. Henry Brooks; mother, Mrs. Dora Brooks; husband, Mr. O.M. Gillenwater; several sisters; and one brother.

Ellaware G. Booher

ELIZABETHTON — Ellaware G. Booher, 78, formerly of 910 Beech St., Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday (Aug. 6, 2008) from Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

She was a Carter County native, born to the late Tillie Forney Avery. Mrs. Booher attended Full Gospel Mission and everyone loved her.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred James Maxwell; and second husband, Henry Booher.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-inlaw, Luther Lee and Patty Maxwell, Johnson City, Larry James and Carolyn Maxwell, Kingsport; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeanette Gorman, Kingsport, Janie and Bill Bowers, Janice and Harvey Simmons, all of Elizabethton; 22 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Nick and Jackie Avery, Greeneville, Theodore and Ann Forney, Lansing, Mich., James and Sandy Avery, Atlanta, Ga.; and one sister and brotherin-law, Tillie C. and Nathaniel Watson, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Daimon DePriest Coclough

KINGSPORT — Daimon De-Priest Coclough, 55, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (July 20, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.


Daimon was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and Sullivan County.
He attended Douglass School and Dobyns-Bennett High School and then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict as a paratrooper. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Parachute Badge.
He was employed by Hutchinson Sealant Corp. Daimon attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He loved his beloved dog, Marty.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bobbie, father, Arthur Columbus Coclough, Jr.; a brother, James Coclough; and a nephew, Arthur “Little Sonny” Coclough IV.

Mr. Hutcherson was a lifelong citizen of Kingsport, a member of Lyons Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and served with the church choir where he enjoyed singing. He was retired from the Eastman Chemical Company.

He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he sang in various choirs and was a past president of the Voices Of Peace.

Tech Sgt. Carl Emory Evans

KINGSPORT — On Thursday June 12, 2008, Tech Sgt. Carl Emory Evans, 54, was peacefully called to eternal rest.
One of seven children of William and Julia Evans, Carl was born in Kingsport on May 4, 1954. He resided in Tampa, Fla. for the past 18 years.


Carl graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1972. He was a decorated veteran of the United States Air Force, and retired after 20 years of service. During his enlistment, Carl served throughout the U.S. and the world, including Nebraska, Alaska, Germany, Korea and Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at R.P. Scherer for 15 years and then Vertis Communications.
Carl’s respectful, appreciative, and social character brought him many loving friends during his life. Always putting the needs of others first, he was considerate and giving. He enjoyed the company of friends and family, as well as listening to jazz and blues music. He also found relaxation in riding around cities and admiring the people and surroundings.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Julia (Muller) Evans (2007); and brother, Ricky Evans (2004).
His love and life will be remembered by his father, William Andrew Evans (Kingsport); his wife, Kathy B. Evans (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.); sons, Emory Ali Evans (Harlem, N.Y), Julius Andrew Evans (Nashville, Tenn.), Emerson Tyler Dorris (Salinas, Calif.) and Joshua Storm Evans (Kingsport); two sisters, Kathy Evans (Kingsport), Gail Evans (Kingsport); three brothers, William Earl Evans (Stacy) (Kansas City, Mo.), Dale Evans (Marie) (Norfolk, Va.) and John Evans (Shaun) (Kingsport); two aunts, Willie Bond and Betsy Ann Pierce (Jack); one uncle, Hugh Hodges; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Pastor Thomas R. Turner

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Pastor Thomas R. Turner, 46, went home to be with the Lord Sunday (May 11, 2008) at Medical College of Va. in Richmond, Va. after suffering with an illness for a year.


Born in Bluefield, W.Va., he moved to Kingsport as a child. In 2004, he moved to Martinsville, Va. to pastor a church.
At Mt. Zion Tabernacle Holiness Church, he was the assistant pastor, treasurer and Sunday school superintendent. At Temple of Christ, he was the pastor and president over the Western District Region #1 Jubilee.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elder James C. Turner; and his sister, Barbara J. Turner.
Surviving are his mother, Pastor Lillie R. Turner of Kingsport; wife, Mrs. Lucy Turner of Martinsville, Va.; daughters, Mandie N. Turner and Brittany M. Turner of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six sisters, Lelia M. Latta (William) of Columbus, Ohio, Ruby T. Gaylord of Morristown, N.J., Tempie R. Mc-Connell (Al) of Toledo, Ohio, Dorothy Partridge and Susie Schofield, both of Columbus, Ohio and Janet E. Parks of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, James E. Turner (Margaret) of Kingsport, Lester L. Turner (Robyn) of Marion Va. and Brady A. Turner of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law, Nathaniel Woods of Kingsport; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

KINGSPORT — Derick Y. Appiah-Kesse, left this world unexpectedly to be with the Lord on April 20, 2008.
He was a kind and loving person that impacted the lives of everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Reba Bristol, of Boiling Springs, N.C.
Survivors include his parents, Ms. Carol Bristol, Kingsport and Andrew Appiah-Kesse, of Lowell, Mass.; maternal grandfather James Bristol, of Kingsport; two brothers, his twin, Eric Appiah-Kesse, Johnson City and Jordan Appiah-Kesse, Kingsport; one sister, Ms. Caressia Bristol, Kingsport and brother-in-law Tamon Carpenter, of Kingsport; three nephews, Deonte` Bristol , Dequante` Bristol, and Devante` Bristol; and a God-daughter Jada; and a special friend Ms. Jessie Thompson, Kingsport.

Mary Emogene Hankins

KINGSPORT — Mrs. Mary Emogene Hankins, 84, 324 Dunbar Street, departed this life Friday evening (April 11, 2008) at Brookhaven Manor.



Emogene retired from Quebecor and later went to work for Families First and KHA. She was a very active in her church serving on the stewardess board, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. Emogene was also active in her community. She was a volunteer for the Riverview Boys Club, which earned her the award for “Person of the Year”. Emogene also served on the Parent and Teachers Association Board at Douglass High School.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Hankins; grandson, Norman Hankins, Jr.; her parents, Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Eula Cartwright; four brothers, Thomas, Phillip, Robert and Roy Cartwright; two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Gilmore and Mrs. Lorraine Lollar.
She is survived by one son, Mr. Norman Hankins, Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Joy Hankins-Underwood, Chattanooga, Tenn. and Ms. Virginia Hankins, Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. John Cartwright, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Bond (Thomas), Mc-Donough, Ga. and Mrs. Eula Leeper, Kingsport.
Visitation hour will be from 6 p.m. till the hour of service at Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church. Friends may visit at her daughter's residence at 930 Maple Street at anytime.

Minnie Earl Owens Lyons

KINGSPORT — Minnie Earl Owens Lyons, 93, passed away Tuesday (March 25, 2008) at Asbury Place in Johnson City.


She was born Feb. 14, 1915 in Greenville, S.C. to the late Samuel and Lula Owens.
Prior to her moving to Kingsport, she was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Taylors, S.C. She graduated from Sterling High School, the Class of ’39.
Mrs. Lyons was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Kingsport, for over 60 years. Prior to her illness, Mrs. Lyons was active in a number of ministries at Shiloh, deaconess, senior choir, Golden Saints Bible Study, director of decorations, Annie Hickman Missionary Society and honorary usher. She also served in the community. Mrs. Lyons was a member of the Women’s Service League, the Voguettes, and many other organizations.
She also enjoyed traveling and dancing and was an avid baseball fan. Minnie took great joy in growing flowers and beautiful plants and she enjoyed cooking and welcoming guests into her home.
She was preceded in death by her faithful husband, Richard C. Lyons, Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Owens Featherstone, Mrs. Inez Owens Smith and Mrs. Lacunice Owens Johnson; three brothers, Samuel Owens, LeRoy Owens and Orelious “Reel” Owens; one great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Leigh Lyons; one niece, Mrs. Gloria Johnson Cheeks; and two nephews, J.W. Johnson and Joe Brunson Owens, Sr.
Surviving are her son, Roxy B. Lyons, Sr. and wife, Manon,Largo, Fla.; two grandsons, Roxy B. Lyons, Jr. and wife, Laura, Knoxville, Tenn. and Rodney E. Lyons and wife, Jessica, Atlanta, Ga.; one granddaughter, Veronique A. Lyons, Virginia Beach; one great-grandson, Roxy B. Lyons, III, Knoxville; one niece, Mrs. Marion Webb and husband, James, Columbus, Ga.; and two nephews, Billy Johnson and Bobby Johnson of Taylors, S.C.; as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews of South Carolina.

KINGSPORT — Clifford Kenneth (Tody) Hughes, Jr. born Oct. 4, 1948 made his journey home March 28, 2008.
He was a member of the Fall Branch Church of Christ. Tody attended Prospect Elementary in Gate City, Va. where he grew up. He also attended Douglass High School in Kingsport and graduated from Gate City High School in 1967. He attended computer school in Maryland and worked as a computer programmer at Holston Defense, Mason Dixon, Raytheon, First National Bank and TVA. Currently employed at Dean’s Foods in Johnson City as a computer analyst.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mrs. Joni Hughes; his son and wife, Marcus (Jamie) Hughes; his daughter and husband, Mrs. Jada (Bruce) McGee; his James, Halie, grandchildren, Dalvin, Lexis, Kaylee Hughes; his sister, Mrs. Patricia (Jack) Anderson, Gate City, Va..

KINGSPORT — Mr. William Charles Fugate, born June 2, 1944, has gone home to be with the Lord after a long battle with illness. He won’t have to suffer anymore.
William C. Fugate better known as Charlie or Bill worked at A.F.G. plant and served in the U.S. Army. He was a faithful member of the Central Baptist Church. He was a member of Clinch Mt. Lodge. He also belonged to the Tennessee Association of the I.B.P.O.E.W.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ms. Alzenia Fugate; father, Mr. William D. Fugate; and his mother, Mrs. Lola M. Fugate.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mrs. Joann Fugate; sons, William C. James "Jim" Rutledge


NEWPORT NEWS - James 'Jim' Rutledge Sr., our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, left to be with the Lord on March 6, 2008, with his family by his side.
He was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Tennessee. He graduated from Douglass High School, Kingsport, Tennessee. As an Army recruit, he fought in the Vietnam War, and eventually settled in Virginia. He was a career maintenance man at area residential-business establishments. He is remembered as a caring man with a great sense of humor and big family values. He was a huge 'Redskins' fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dayton and Ora Lee Rutledge; his sisters, Clara McClintock, Elizabeth Carr; brother, Jackie Rutledge; and former wife, Linda.

James leaves to cherish his memories his children, Cecelia (Tenn), Crystal, Karmaleta (Michael), Linda Rena' (Kenny), James (Diane) and Karen; a brother, Carl Rutledge (Tenn) and his children; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13th, at Antioch Baptist Church, 1563 Old Buckroe Road, Hampton, with the Rev. Dr. Raymond Lassiter Jr. officiating. Interment was at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.

(January 5, 1943 - February 19, 2008)


Evangelist Elizabeth Ann Carr, 65, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 19, 2008. Born in Johnson City, Tenn., she moved to Newport News, Va., where she resided until her death.

She attended public schools in Tennessee, and later received training from the then Hampton Institute in the medical/nursing field. She was employed at Whitaker Memorial Hospital until its closing.

Elizabeth loved the Lord and maintained her stewardship at Straight Gate and Narrow Way Holiness in the Lord Jesus Christ, Hampton, Va., under her husband/Pastor Elder Lee Carr.

Evangelist Carr will be greatly missed by her husband, daughter and a host of family and friends.

Viewing for Evangelist Carr will be held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a wake service from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th St., Newport News. A funeral service will be held noon Monday, Feb. 25, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. James Henry Kyle


ROGERSVILLE — James Henry Kyle, 82, of Rogersville, returned to his father in Heaven on Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2008) after an extended illness.
Henry was a very active member of Hasson Street Christian Church as long as his health permitted. Henry served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army where he was a sharp shooter. He served his time in the Philippines and New Guinea.
Henry retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority after 36 years of service. He was an avid walker and helped many people in the community. He attended Swift High School and graduated from Swift College and the Brick Mason School in Virginia.
His parents, Riley and Della Blevins Kyle; son-in-law, Donnie Brice, Sr.; and one brother, Robert Kyle preceded Mr. Kyle in death.
Henry leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Imogene Kyle of the home; children, Della Tate (Jerry), Jimmy Kyle, Aaron Kyle (Cecily), Janet Kyle Olen (Thomas),

CHURCH HILL — Carl Leeper, Jr., 70, of 129 Ford Lane, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 9, 2008 at Wellmont Hospice House following a long battle with canc e r.
Carl was a native of Big Stone Gap, Va., and had spent most of his life in Church Hill. He was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman and owned and operated Leeper Small Engine Sales and Repair. He was vice president of the New Canton Utility-District. He found a new church home at Wells Chapel Church in Pennington Gap, Va. with it's loving membership.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl, Sr., and Lucille Sanders Leeper; sisters, Frances Rivers and Helen Leeper; brothers, Robert “Sandy” Leeper, Charles Leeper and Lawrence Leeper.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Zeola Leeper, Church Hill; daugher and son-in-law, Robin and Charlie Morgan, Kingsport; two sons, Keith Leeper, Johnson City and Randy Leeper, Rogersville; three devoted granddaughters, April Morgan, Rashea Morgan and Briana Leeper; two brothers, Nelson Leeper, Waco, Tex. and Donnie Leeper, Morristown; two very extraordinary sisters-in-law, Louise Washington, Elk Grove, Calif. and Thelma Dulaney, Knoxville; two wonderful aunts and uncles, Leon and Lula Leeper, Philadelphia, Pa.; and from his boyhood hometown of Big Stone Gap, Va., Randall and Viola Simpson; many wonderful nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends that he loved and who have been of comfort during his illness.

KINGSPORT — Mr. George W. Foster, Jr. (Butch), 57, departed this life on Friday, (Jan. 25, 2008) at James H. Quillen Medical Center, Mt. Home, Tenn. after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mr. Foster was born in Kingsport on Aug. 24, 1959 to George and Georgia Foster, both of whom preceded him in death.

Church Hill- Ray Scover Leeper, 80, of Church Hill went home to be with his heavenly father on Thursday evening (January 10, 2008) following a lengthy illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Church Hill. He was a member of Lyons Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he served on the trustee board & the steward along with being an affiliate of Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kingsport. Ray shared his culinary talents for 41 years as the Executive Chef at Tennessee Eastman Company. He continued to bless churches, friends and family with his gifts from the kitchen & his heart his entire life. His love of cooking lives on through his children, grandchildren & friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Leeper & Kate Leeper; the mother of his children, Mary B. Leeper; his brothers, James Carter (J.C.) William Rayburn Leeper & his wife, Jessie (Greeneville, SC) & Ray (Ray Ray) S. Leeper II (Gray, TN); his devoted companion & friend, Ethel Ruth Russell (Kingsport, TN) along with her children, Sherry, Robin, Teresa & Scottie; his grandchildren, Pierre, Ramon, Michelle, Tia, Christopher, Cristin, Mia, Melissa & Amber; 6 great grandchildren; a very special brother-in-law, Dana Carroll (Frisco, Texas); his special cousins, Zeola Leeper & Barbara Hoskins; he is also survived by several more cousins, a host of nieces, nephews & many dear friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday (January 18, 2008) from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or friends may also call anytime at the residence.

A homegoing service will be conducted on Friday (January 18, 2008) at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. James A. Snapp being the officiant.

A graveside service will follow the funeral at Lyons Chapel Cemetery Annex with Ozine Bly, William Carpenter, Richard Ford, James W. Leeper, Gregory Manis & Dion Russell serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Clifford Leeper, James A. Leeper & Billy Lyons.
